1and1 Going Mobile With .MOBI

PHILADELPHIA, September 14, 2006 –1 &1 Internet, Inc. (1&1), a subsidiary of United Internet, today announced that it is offering the top level domain (TLD) Dot.mobi. The new class of domains ending with .mobi is backed by 13 leading mobile and Internet organizations and addresses the need for seamless access to Internet-enabled mobile phones, for delivering customized information to mobile devices.

Every person or organization is free to apply for a preferred .mobi domain. Customers of 1&1 can pre-register for free via the 1&1 Control Panel. During this pre-registration period everybody can request as many domain-names as desired. These subscriptions will be held until the general registration on October 11th and will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis. 1&1 .mobi domains are registered for two year periods at $19.99 per year.

“The .mobi domain serves perfectly the need for an increasingly mobile society,” said Andreas Gauger, Chairman of 1&1 Internet. “Websites with .mobi will be able to offer an intuitive direct access for millions of mobile devices and address new target-groups. As there is no charge applying for the pre-registration with 1&1, this means that there is really no reason not to apply for their preferred domain-name.”

According to dotMobi, the ICANN appointed global registry, .mobi is the first – and only – top level domain dedicated to users who access the Internet through their mobile phones. In addition, mobile phones are purchased four times as often as a personal computer, meaning there’s a sizable population whose main access to the Internet is via mobile phone.
