Spirent, Extreme Networks Team to Demonstrate Performance of Industry’s Open Fabric Data Center Solutions

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Extreme Networks has selected Spirent Communications’ high-speed data center and cloud computing test solution to showcase the performance of Extreme Networks® Open Fabric data center solution featuring the newly announced BlackDiamond® X8 switch, a high capacity, high density 40GbE core chassis for Cloud environments, which is expected to begin customer trials in October 2011. The demonstration, featuring a 20 Tbps Ethernet switch fabric, marks one of the first public tests in which traffic is scaled to over double digit terabit speeds with dense 40GbE port connectivity.

Extreme Networks Open Fabric data center solution includes a portfolio of purpose-built, Cloud-scale data center network switching solutions allowing organizations to more cost-effectively build highly scalable, mobile and virtualized networks with low latency, high density and energy efficiency.

“The ability to validate services and infrastructure between any points in the cloud is critical, particularly as enterprises and cloud providers look to scale and virtualize their networks,” said Harpreet Chadha, vice president of product management for Extreme Networks. “Spirent has allowed us to put our latest Open Fabric data center solution, the BlackDiamond X8, to the test and demonstrate its 40 GbeE performance and capacity to deliver critical services.”

For this demonstration, Extreme Networks is utilizing the Spirent TestCenter HyperMetrics 40/100G Ethernet solution. Because modern switch and router fabrics span multiple chassis and can be expanded to build systems supporting hundreds or thousands of ports, the level of traffic produced by the Spirent HyperMetrics module can fully load modern multi-terabit backplanes and fabrics to assess system performance and verify reliability when deployed in large mission critical environments supporting millions of user application flows. Spirent’s high speed data center solutions offers cloud data center switch manufacturers space efficient, power efficient, and cost effective solutions for loading multi-terabit fabrics to full capacity.

“Recent reports regarding cloud attacks, downtime and poor performance raise questions about the amount of time and money that can potentially be saved by thorough testing,” said Jeff Schmitz, vice president, Networks & Applications at Spirent. “It is gratifying to offer companies such as Extreme Networks the data density and application traffic capacity required to conduct cloud testing at a cost-effective price point.”
